While the reading can be a little bit dry (I recommend some cheese and wine as well as some paper for taking notes to help it go down), this thin volume is a fine outline of an alchemical perspective on the mysteries of life.

I would recommend this piece to someone who is interested in the meaning of life, different anthropological perspectives, and has some familiarity with common occult symbolism, or is willing to look things up constantly.

If a few chapters of The Golden Bough weren't too intimidating, this could be a good read for you.

decent OLED overview, vastly overpriced

As someone relatively new to OLED technology and fabrication techniques, this reference was recommended as being a valuable resource. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent, high-level overview of OLED processes and technology, but it is in NO WAY worth the asking price. Luckily, I purchased through his personal website, so the cost was a reduced $97 and I have a searchable PDF, and even then, that's vastly overpriced for what this is. Even worse if you purchase at ~$180 from Amazon.

The book is 140 pages long, but only 80 of those are actual content, the rest are appendices, like descriptions of words and companies that are easily found online. I get that Mr. Mertens must make a living, but this is not on the level of a college textbook, to which it is similarly priced. I read through the text in about 6 hours, and learned a fair amount, but it's still not in depth at all. Perhaps if you're just looking for a summary of OLED and some production numbers, mainly about Samsung and LG, you'll be pleased, but most of this is found online. There is very little technical information, and he even says in one section that the technical aspects of substrate, backpanel, etc., are beyond the scope of this book. That's fine, but then why is he charging $100-200 for it? At that price, I expect a reasonably high level of technical detail, not just a collection of revenue numbers, analyst trends, and production volumes from major companies.

If this book cost $30-40, I would be pleased, maybe even $50 for a hard copy, but there just isn't enough content here to merit what is being charged. There are quite a few editorial mistakes in the text, which wouldn't be a big deal, but for the price, I expect a more professionalism. If you want a very high-level overview of OLED technology, with an emphasis on production numbers and supply chain, this might be a good read. If you're looking for any type of technical aspects of OLED fabrication and good explanations of current technical challenges, this won't be worth the time. Additionally, there are no references, so if you're curious about anything you find in the text, you're on your own to find out more.

I'd give this 3 or maybe (...maybe...) 4 stars for the content, if it were priced fairly, but as is, not worth the time.

About the Author
Phillippe Schyns has been a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Glasgow University since 1995. He received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from Brown University in 1992, and spent two years at MIT as a postdoctoral fellow in the Brain and Cognitive Science department.

Robert Goldstone has been a professor in psychology and cognitive science at Indiana University since 1991. He was the 1991 recipient of the Marquis Award for Most Outstanding Dissertation in Psychology from University of Michigan, the recipient of two American Psychological Association Young Investigator awards for research articles in 1995, and the 1996 recipient of the Chase Memorial Award for Outstanding Young Researcher in Cognitive Science from Carnegie Mellon University.

Great Reference Book while doing Sharepoint Deployments

I bought this first version of this book back in February for my 2nd Customer Deployment of Sharepoint. There are several things you may already know about Sharepoint Designer, but I found this book best used by intermediaries; as Reference Material.
For Beginners I also recommend to have and take the time to use the book because there will be things that will make more sense when you are presented with Business Case situations.
I put the book down for a month and now have started a 3rd customer deployment for a Bio-Tech company that wants to control workflows. Now I am re-referencing the book for additional triggers.
Down the road I can see using Data-Sources to create reports connected to Oracle DBs, but there is not a need right now or security access.
Hence the reference material.

Excellent for the person who knows something about SharePoint already

Like many tech book series, Microsoft's "Step by Step series has had its hits - and not infrequent misses. On the whole, I have found the Step By Step books to run toward the superficial, which sometimes is acceptable and sometimes not. "Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 Step by Step", however, is one of the best I've seen in this series to date.

Microsoft SharePoint is a complex platform. Newcomers get confused between the various incarnations of SharePoint. Further complicating matters are the interplay between SharePoint Designer and Microsoft's Visual Studio. Bottom line is the SharePoint universe is complex. Author Penny Coventry deals here with Office SharePoint Designer 2007 and what it does. She warns at the outset that the reader must have access to a server running Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Server 2007. I have seen reviews of this book criticizing the lack of a sample site on the accompanying CD. The author is clear that she does not provide the commercial software for this: if you want it, you have to buy it or otherwise have access to a running site.

Another issue is that this book is intended for the novice user of SharePoint Designer 2007, a product that has its roots in Microsoft's now discontinued Front Page 2003 product, which was intended exclusively for website design. SharePoint Designer is, in the final analysis, a programming tool with web design capabilities. Thus, the user with a programming background, especially in Visual Studio, who is looking for an introduction to SharePoint web design will be much more at home with the content of this book than will a web designer with no programming experience who is trying to learn about SharePoint itself.

If you have no experience in with SharePoint, programming SharePoint or web design, this is not the book for you.

Author Coventry, much to her credit, explicitly points out that SharePoint Designer actually has little usefulness for the average SharePoint worker. It is intended for the jobs that can't be accomplished using only a browser, but don't require the full power of Visual Studio. Ms. Coventry also maintains an excellent website in support of the book in particular and SharePoint in general. The URL is listed in the book.

With all those caveats and conditions out of the way, it's time to discuss the book itself.

"Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 Step by Step" is unusually well done. Its flow is well designed, beginning with a detailed history of SharePoint Designer, some information on SharePoint and how it interacts with Designer. And then it is on to doing things using SharePoint Designer 2007. Once again the potential reader is warned: if you don't have access to a server running SharePoint, this book will be of little use to you.

Coventry does a good job of explaining how SharePoint Designer works. Much of what she says will be familiar to a large degree to someone with experience with web design tools like FrontPage or DreamWeaver, but the information about SharePoint will be new.

Overall, a solid introduction to SharePoint Designer, but make sure you already have some understanding of SharePoint and access to a SharePoint server before you pick this one up.

Practical and Powerful

Fantastic instructional materials on how to use SharePoint Designer 2007 effectively! I made the mistake early on of buying SharePoint books that focused on infrastructure-related topics on SharePoint. This book provides practical and powerful insights on how to exploit the user-facing capabilities of SharePoint. I was cautious about purchasing a Step-by-Step series book due to my past experiences reading books in the series that had what I believed to be superficial content. This instance broke that mold in style. It was evident that the author not only has book knowledge of the subject, she also has practitioner knowledge. It seemed like she anticipated every question that I had as I read through the book. Excellent work!

Perfect for your toddler astronaut

My son loves all things related to outer space. This is a great book for a 2 1/2 year old. I read in one review that the pages were not sturdy enough for toddlers. My little guy is pretty rough on books, and it's holding up just fine! It is NOT a board book, and some of the pages are showing use, but that's what books are for!

A great concept, though the design leaves a bit to be desired!

I wanted to like this book a lot. It has a good rhyming scheme for toddlers and covers the eight planets in our solar system. Its illustrations are simple and colorful--I like that when one lifts up the flap there is a little window into what the surface of the planet looks like. My major issue with the book is due to its incredibly low level of content (the book can be read cover to cover in under a minute) and the flimsy design of the flaps. I had hoped that by purchasing a board book, it would be sturdy enough to withstand the abuse of a toddler, but that is not the case. However, if you have an older toddler, then this book is a good (albeit simple) primer on the planets!
