Review
I've lived on a cattle ranch for twenty years, so venison in all its forms has always been a bit of a mystery to me. For that reason, I devoured every page of Buck, Buck, Moose. Hank Shaw lives, sleeps, eats, and breathes venison--and his passion is palpable. From laying out the ancient connection between man and deer to presenting clear, hands-on instructions for handling and cooking venison, no stone is left unturned. Hank has absolutely outdone himself, and I know this book will be enjoyed by venison enthusiasts and novices alike. --Ree Drummond, New York Times Bestselling author of The Pioneer Woman Cooks

All of the serious hunters that I hang around with -- and I hang around with a lot of them -- use Hank Shaw's wild game recipes. His stuff is authentic, fail-safe, and well-written. They oughta give this man a Nobel prize. --Steve Rinella, author and host of Meateater on Sportsman Channel

There is no reference that celebrates the outdoor lifestyle and dedication to responsibly harvesting everything antlered like Buck, Buck, Moose. AS a chef and outdoors enthusiast I have been searching for a complete guide from hunt to table. It has now arrived. --Bryan Voltaggio, Top Chef finalist, deer hunter and James Beard Award nominee

Great info, instructions and photos
By DPop
Shaw writes as if he were in my kitchen helping me learn to cook -- and practicing cooking techniques while using his game and other wild food recipes. He anticipates my questions and answers the "why?" Great pictures and recipes that encourage experimentation served with a bit of philosophy worthy of a chef, brewer, hunter and fisherman.

In my opinion this is his best book yet -- the first was very good, the second was excellent, and this one is outstanding!

Dr. Ambedkar and Untouchability: Fighting the Indian Caste System (The CERI Series in Comparative Politics and International Studies)By

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891–1956) rose from a community of "untouchables," to become a major figure in modern Indian history. Christophe Jaffrelot's biography reconsiders Dr. Ambedkar's life and thought and his unique combination of pragmatism and idealism. Establishing himself as a scholar, activist, journalist, and educator, Ambedkar ultimately found himself immersed in Indian politics and helped to draft the nation's constitution as law minister in Nehru's first cabinet. Ambedkar's ideas remain an inspiration to India's Dalit community.

Ambedkar a failure?
By Ganjur
Christopher Jaffrelot, Director of the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales, has written a well-balanced account of history of untouchability in modern India in general and Dr Ambedakr in particular.
Ambedkar was born in Mahar community, the largest scheduled caste community in Maharashtra -- the land of Mahars -- the birth place of anti-Brahmin movement, which gave inspiration to such virulent anti-Brahmins such as Periyar and Anna Dorai. He was born as Ambavade, Ambedkar was his teacher, a Brahmin, who took an interest in Ambavade and gave his own name to him. Thanks to Maharaja of Baroda, who had anti-Brahmin sentiments, he was able to go to Columbia University in the USA, on the condition that he works for the king for 10 years. Unfortunately, when Ambedkar returned, he was unable to work for the Maharaja because he could not get a lodge in the city, nobody wanting to board an untouchable. Dejected, he resigned and went back to Bombay. He, with the help of another Maharaja, of Kollhapur, who was worried about Brahmins' aspirations for their `long-lost' power, went to England and got his degree in economics. The book gives a good description of agonies of the caste system, with its ----ascending order of hatred and descending order of contempt -as Ambedkar used to frequently say, Ambedkar's efforts to unite the untouchables, his own political ambitions, his role in writing of the Constitution and finally, his religious conversion to Buddhism .
Caste System: Before Phule's anti-Brahmin movement, there was an effort by others in the community, notably the great poet Chokamela, who saw good things in Brahmins and made efforts to emulate them. Phule not only derided these efforts at `Sanskritization' but attacked the Bhakti movement of Chokamela, as that `equalized all castes only spiritually, but not socially'. Phule and later Ambedkar, claimed Mahars are persecuted Buddhists who became decadent because of segregation and inhuman treatment by the caste Hindus, this being the reason why Mahars consider Brahmins as inauspicious and don't permit them to enter their colonies and begging was not considered as a charity but a right. His efforts to unite dalits was not more successful because, Ambedkar although brilliant was not a great organizer and the popularity of Gandhiji among dalits was so high that Ambedkar had to back off in confrontations with Gandhi, the most notable of these battles being the separate vote block the British agreed to create as wanted by Ambedkar. Gandhi went on a fast and Ambedkar relented. Ambedkar claimed that Mahars were not Hindus, but fought for admitting them into Hindu temples and stated very early in his career that he was not going to die as a Hindu.
Interestingly, Ambedkar did not blame the Brahmins for the caste system, instead blaming the Scriptures which described the caste system, saying that even non-Brahmins wanted to follow what is written in the Scriptures out of devotion or fear. The `Scripture' that is quoted most often is Manusmrithi and Purusha Sukta which states Brahmins originated from the mouth of the Lord and shudras only from the legs. He was against reserved quotas for the dalits.
Religious conversion: Ambedkar seriously considered conversion in 1936. He openly wrote about the three religions he was considering, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism, mostly analyzing what each of these of religions have to offer in terms of economic, political and social power to his community as hundreds of thousands of dalits were willing to convert to the religion of his choice. It is interesting to note that Christians showed no interest, saying that they did not want anybody to convert to Christianity for any reason other than spiritual, while the leaders of other two religions began to court Ambedkar. Even Shankaracharya of Karweer peet encouraged them to convert to Sikhism saying that there is really no hope for real change in the Hindu caste system.
When Ambedkar did convert just few months before his death, he did seem to do it for the right reasons. He rejected Christianity and Islam because they are not of Bharatiya culture. Many Mahars converted in the next 10 years, so much so the number Buddhists went up from 2500in 1950's to 2.5 million in 1960's. In my opinion, while it is hard to call him failure, he definitely did not achieve his full potential, because his motivation was hatred, which one can argue is understandable. If we break the ascending order of hate, may be that will eliminate the descending order of contempt and vice versa.

A Sophisticated, Informative Read
By Will Jerom
Jaffrelot has written a concise book on B.R. Ambedkar, engaging some very important scholarship on the man. Those familiar with the leader of the Mahar Untouchables (Ambedkar converted to Buddhism, opposed the caste system, opposed "Gandhism", and was instrumental in writing the Indian Constitution) will appreciate this book. The author largely defends Ambedkar while admitting that Ambedkar was not successful in accomplishing many of his goals. For those unfamiliar with Ambedkar, Buddhism, or India, this will be a tough read. Jaffrelot does not have a glossary, and expects his readers to be fairly conversant with the context of Ambedkar's life. So experts will love the book, while novices will find it difficult to digest.

The book is in a good format I've been doing .Net 1.0 and 1.1 since beta 1 2.0 I have not done much I found this book to be just what is needed to find the answers to the 2.0 questions, if you are a 1.1 experienced programmer and are moving or porting to 2.0 this is well worth the under $50.00 price tag. I can see keeping this one handy for a year or so.

Good book for some purposes, not quite cooked
By Tursted Source
There are lots of tips and tricks in this book on ASP.NET 2.0 presented in a "Problem: Solution" format that make it a worthwhile timesaver for experienced developers. Code is shown for both VB.NET and C#.

The problem I have is that is little or no discussion of alternatives or the circumstances when a particular recipe should be used. This means inexperienced developers might implement recipes that work for their immediate problem but add maintenance, performance or architectural issues down the road.

For example, there are 72 pages on using the DataGrid control. Except for backward compatibility there is no valid reason to use the DataGrid in ASP.NET 2.0 -- use the GridView control instead. I'd go so far as to say use of the DataGrid in 2.0 is deprecated -- don't do it in new code.

Likewise the data binding examples use SqlDataSource -- never XMLDataSource or, importantly, ObjectDataSource. ObjectDataSource is the way to go when we want to build a modern architecture application where we have separated business logic, data access code, and the UI.

It appears that this book was written quickly to get something out for the 2.0 market before the "2.0ness" of the recipes was fully baked in.

Good Way to Get Started with ASP.NET 2.0 - Wish it had more advanced topics
By R. Walling
For those transitioning from ASP.NET 1.x this is a fantastic introduction to learning how things should be done with 2.0. The book is well-written, concise, and easy to absorb the concepts it presents.

I've always loved the "Cookbook" format, which is to present a list of tasks 100 or so tasks that you might want to accomplish, and then give detailed instructions on how to accomplish each one. The one thing I would like to have seen, and the reason it didn't receive 5 stars, is that the book focuses on introductory tasks. Since I've been working with 2.0 for several months I already knew how to do most of the items they discussed.

Overall, this book will serve as a great reference.

SHOULD BE READ BY YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE.
By D. Blankenship
As noted in the description of this work, "To be A Slave" was a 1969 Newbery Honor Book, An ALA Notable Book, a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year and a Smithsonian Magazine Best Book of the Year. Seldom have I read a book that was actually deserving of these awards more than this work, and in my opinion, so many, many more!

I must note right up front that even though this work was and is targeted for the 9 to 12 age group, it is applicable and fitting for just about any age group over the age of 9. I strongly suggest that this age group, or many in it, may not be ready for this particular read. In my opinion the age grouping probably should start at about 15 or 16 at the earliest. Younger readers should probably have some adult guidance. Folks, we are talking pretty brutal here. Rarely have I read an "adult" work covering this subject which held the dignified impact this book offers. It is profoundly upsetting, and rightfully so. The author, Julius Lester, pulls no punches throughout the entire work and gives his readers a dreadful dose of reality. I must admit that many passages in this work; many of the firsthand accounts (more about that later) of former slaves in the United States, made me literally physically ill. This is a good thing as it is like a cold splash of water (or more accurately...acid), in the face, bring the reader from a compete state of sleep into full and painful wakefulness and awareness.

Many of the stories told here were either suppressed or more or less ignored until the 1930s when the Federal Writers Project was organized. One of their tasks was to interview as many former slaves as possible and record as accurately as possible their story. The author is quick to point out that due to the times, much liberty was taken in rewriting in reference to dialect as it was felt that the average reader simply would not understand the words written and also due to the fact that it was feared that by using the dialect of many individuals interviewed would place in the hand ammunition for those that were trying to prove the inferiority of the Black Race. So sad, but the authors or interviewers did a wonderful job and to a certain extent I must agree with their decision to do this. I have noted that the youth of today have great trouble if reading various dialects and it turns them off a book quite quickly. This is a pity, but we must face the reality of the situation.

This work is a collection of actual interviews with former slaves, not only from the Writer's Project, but documents dating back to the founding of the nation. Most of these interviews and accounts can be found in the Library of Congress. This work covers every aspect of the life of a slave, from their capture in Africa, their trip through the Middle Passage, and then their life of servitude in their new "home." The author addresses the extreme mental and physical cruelty involved, the daily life of a plantation slave, the slave breeding farms of Virginia, the deplorable living condition that the vast majority of these people were forced to live in, the tearing apart of families, diet, clothing, working conditions...and on and on.

I was absolutely delighted in the fact that through this collection of first hand accounts and the authors side comments, that the myth of the "happy darkie" who was content in his or her lot in life and that the vast majority of slaves were quite devoted to their masters. This is a myth that still lingers to this very day in some quarters.

The author is quick to point out that the United States, of all the slave holding countries in the Western Hemisphere, was probably the most brutal and efficient in the effort to stamp out all cultural identity. Various methods were used from the extremely brutal to a rather sophisticated (for that time) brain washing. Religion was used as an effective weapon by the slave holders, which is pretty disgusting when you stop to think of it.

Now readers take warning! There are aspects of this work that are upsetting to the extreme! Accounts recorded during the Middle Passage of babies being thrown over the side of the ship, the deliberate drowning of infants in front of their mothers on Plantations, the tearing apart of families at auction and the sever savagery of the beatings and torture of many of these unfortunate individuals makes for some very grim reading. The simple act of making it through a work day on a typical plantation was an absolute horror. And this went on day after day after day for an entire life time for many of these individuals.

This is classified as a YA but is a rather hardcore YA but that being said, it is probably one of the most useful, effective and truthful books of this genre I have read in years. I cannot imagine a more effective teaching tool. Our country went through two major blights, very dark areas in our history, which are still with us today...slavery and the genocide of the Native Americans. We need to be aware of both of these horrors least we forget. Works such as this go along way in the education process and to be quite frank, we need more of this caliber.

This work needs to be at the head of any young persons reading list, and I must say that it should be at the head of any adults list too. I highly recommend this work but do be prepared to be shocked if you have neglected your readings in the past addressing this subject. For the adult reader, I might suggest further reading and the work This Species of Property: Slave Life and Culture in the Old South (Galaxy Books)

it was phenominal
By A Customer
1968 School Library Journal Best Book of the Year In an intensely personal new introduction written for this thirtieth anniversary edition, Julius Lester states that at age ten, when his father told him his family's history went back to a bill of sale and no further, the words were one of the defining moments of my life. Approximately fifteen years later he began compiling the words of ex-slaves--a good portion of which had never been previously published--and establishing the structure for To Be a Slave. The ease and speed with which this structure came made him realize that this book was one of the things [he] had been put on earth to do. In an equally eloquent, new introductory note Tom Feelings expresses a similar sentiment regarding the personal impact of his work for To Be a Slave and his belief in doing work that mov[es] us so emotionally, it makes all of us feel its truth way down deep inside. For thirty years American readers of all ages and walks of life have been affected by the truth of To Be a Slave, which remains one of the few works to present what it felt like to be slave in America in the words of black men and women who lived it rather than filtered through the eyes of others. Paired with Mr. Lester's historical commentary and powerful and soulful paintings by Mr. Feelings, To Be a Slave makes the clear and moving distinction between the generalizations made about slaves and what the emotional reality was for human beings [whose] condition was slavery. I am grateful to the parents, teachers, librarians, and booksellers who have found [To Be a Slave] to be of value. Most of all I am grateful to all those who have read it, to all those who read it. History is not just facts and events. History is also a pain in the heart, and we repeat history until we are able to make another's pain in the heart our own. -- Julius Lester The truth can stretch children's minds, stimulate their imaginations in a creative way, and strengthen their spirits.

Great Rebuttal To The Ole Stars-And-Bars Apologists
By Franklin the Mouse
My 12-year-old son, who is in 7th grade, selected this book from his English teacher's personal class library. It had a huge impact on our African-American son. He as well as his older brother are black and adopted. My wife and I are white. We spent quite a few hours talking about the nature of prejudice and how it manifests in many different ways. I promised "To Be a Slave" was the next one on my list after completing the book I was currently reading. The paradigm for our family is anything goes when it comes to topics we discuss: race, drugs, sex, religion, profanity etc.

Mr. Lester's compilation and descriptions cover the full extent of slavery in America. In their own words, the former slaves describe being abducted from their African homeland; the brutality endured during their arduous trek to North America; the slave auctions; the horrible separation of families to different slave buyers; beatings; plantation life; religious beliefs; Uncle Toms; efforts at resistance; Emancipation and Jim Crow laws. The blunt nature of the stories left a pit in my stomach. Mr. Feelings' accompanying black-&-white drawings add another level of gloom to the work.

Mr. Lester's book is outstanding. It may be tailored for young teens, but the interviews and descriptions supplied by the author are also extremely useful for adults. I seriously question the criteria used for designating certain books as "young reader" material. I read a great deal of nonfiction work and "To Be a Slave" holds up well compared to other books deemed "adult fare." You won't step away from this book without thinking about the darker aspects of the human condition. Educational and riveting stuff packed between this small work that will help anyone understand the true evils of slavery. It's no wonder "this peculiar institution" has left lasting generational scars even up to today.

Just another Warhammer Novel
By G. Dawes
This is another installment of the Warhammer universe, well written, a nice pace to the story.
Characters are well thought out, full in presentation, and we can like them for what they are, from the new volunteer ( Lanz ), to his 3 Musketeer like companions, older and somewhat wiser veterans of battle.

This book is better than some I have read of the setting, however I find only more of the same.

Just a good book to kill time with, nothing more, noting less.

The book just kinda leaves you wanting to know where these people end up after it all, but cant answer that question as the "war" goes on, but in the world of Warhammer what else can you expect ?

Lots of funny banter and exciting battle scenes
By OnceMore
"Call To Arms" is yet another good read from the Empire Army Series. Third entry in the series, it differs from its two predecessors in that, whereas "Reiksguard" and "Iron Company" focused on the roles, respectively, of elite knights and gunnery engineers in the Imperial Army, this novel gives the spotlight to the Scarlets, a well-regarded infantry regiment.

The novel, which can be read as a standalone, has three parts. Part One introduces us to young Dieter Lanz, a new recruit to the Scarlets and foster son of a retired Scarlet who is now a miller. Taught how to fight with a sword since he can walk, Dieter gets to see battle right away, for non-human enemies -- beastmen, goblins, and orcs -- of the empire, newly united by a cunning orc chieftain named Ironfang have invaded a province, and the army in that province has mobilized quickly to fight the enemies.

Within a short time, Dieter gets to show his mettle and bravery, which win him the respect and friendship of Sgt. Bohlen, Rieger, Gerhardt, and Holst. These four men are older than Dieter and protect his back when he gets into trouble with two shady Scarlets.

Unfortunately for the Scarlets, their commanding general makes a fatal mistake. Thousands of the empire army are killed. The remaining men have to flee from the enemies.

Part Two opens with the Count responsible for defending the imperiled province welcoming the Emperor's personal emissary. A decision is made that a general who has previously been forced to retire should be called back to duty. We learn that Dieter, his comrades, and the two shady Scarlets are alive, but even as they continue to fight the enemies, and Dieter gets to put his experience working at a mill to good use in fighting a feared monster troll, Dieter also grows increasingly afraid of getting ambushed by the two shady Scarlets.

Part Three is when the newly recalled general makes his move. Commanding an army that is much, much smaller than the enemy's, the general can only win by outmaneuvering Ironfang. Will he succeed?

Of the first three books in the series that I've read, this one, in my opinion, has the best mix of good dialog (lots of funny banter!), character development (Dieter grows up quickly after getting thrown into battle immediately after becoming a Scarlet), and exciting battle scenes (the wolf riders and trolls are fearsome!). It's still not great literature, but it's a really fun and satisfying read!

A light read.
By Mathew A. Shember
I have not read any of the Empire Army series nor have I played Warhammer. This was a curiosity read and it wasn't bad. It's quick and if I could describe it I would say the book feels like a board game rather then a story.

I wondered if this was a continuation of the series but it has enough to be it's own story.

The story line centers on young Dieter Lanz who seeks to be a recruit of the sword infantry known as the "The Scarlets" His retired foster father Helmut Schau, a respected warrior of the unit, trained him in the ways of soldiering since he was a child. Over time Dieter developed a child's admiration of Scarlets. His fantasy starts to change when he meets Holst who is a member of the Scarlets. Holst is nothing like his imagination of a grand soldier of the Scarlets. They bribe a ride on a support wagon and head off toward the regiment which was called out to deal with a large raiding force of greenskins(Orcs and Goblins).

The idealistic Dieter quickly learns about the realities of war especially when he witnesses the defeat of the army poorly led by a political general rather then a combat general. His dreams of heroics are replaced by flight and fight as the Greenskins hunt the survivors.

I liked the characters and did find the banter between them funny at times. The ending was predictable and the story felt like it ended before it was finished. I will admit I wanted more. Dieter learned the battle was won but the war goes on. However, this is probably it for Dieter and the Scarlets.
