A Spiritual Sage to Baby Boomers Reflects on the Aging of His Generation

Baby Boomers know Ram Dass as an American celebrity from the 1960s who came back from India in 1971 to publish a strange square-shaped book: Be Here Now. Some call that book "the Baby Boomers' Bible"--and there is a good argument behind such a claim. It wasn't until the era of Be Here Now that millions of Americans could immerse themselves in full-scale Asian spirituality and the rest of the world's spiritual diversity.

Since its debut, Be Here Now has racked up a stunning total of 2 million copies sold--and counting. Ram Dass has built on his original message in 11 additional books, a series of audio recordings, documentary films and short videos. Ram Dass also is famous for his 1978 establishment of the Seva Foundation, a highly respected charity that primarily focuses on curing illnesses of the eye in Asia, Africa and Native American communities.

Then, in 1997, Ram Dass made headlines once again for suffering a devastating stroke. As Baby Boomers, we were confronting our own looming mortality as we watched this perennially smiling genie of the `60s utterly humbled by his own body. As Ram Dass puts it himself: "I went from driving my sports car wherever I wanted to go--to being a passenger."

Now, flash forward 16 years to 2013 and in the opening pages of his newest book, Ram Dass briefly retells the dramatic story that many Baby Boomers know so well: As a rising star in the Harvard faculty, 30-something psychologist Dr. Richard Alpert teamed up with psychologist Dr. Timothy Leary. Ram Dass understates their titanic collision: "Meeting Tim was a major turning point in my life." No kidding! The two Harvard scholars experimented with psychedelics, beginning with the mushrooms common in ancient Native American cultures. Leary and Alpert, later to become Ram Dass, were twin lightning rods, interacting with a Who's Who of leading spiritual lights, from Aldous Huxley to Alan Watts and far beyond. They grabbed hold of the forces they were discovering; Ram Dass soon studying in India with his Hindu guru. Collectively, they pumped high-octane spiritual fuel into Baby Boomer culture.

Now, at age 82 as this book is released, Ram Dass is old. That's not an insult. In fact, he says it that way in the book: He's old. He's noticeably slower and more deliberate in choosing his words.

If you read his earlier book Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing, and Dying and thought that was his last word on the issues in that title, the fact is: He didn't know half of what he knows now. He freely admits that. There is great inspiration in the 2013 life and work of Ram Dass, especially in the pages of this new book, whether you are drawn toward Eastern religious traditions or not. As Baby Boomers, we take heart in seeing one of our most colorful mentors take old age and disability in stride. Sure, he's a passenger these days--but, whatever seat he's occupying in that sports car, he's still speeding ahead of us toward our collective horizon line.

I'm no baby boomer....

Polishing the Mirror could've been called Polishing the Paradox, it's so wholeheartedly devoted to cherishing the impossible possibilities of life while fearlessly inviting the inscrutable potential of death, which to Ram Dass is simply "another moment." I think Ram Dass's platform - that of spiritually intrepid westerner transformed into eastern spiritual exemplar - remains, if no longer unique, then uniquely compelling. The authenticity of his personal transformation, his forty-odd years of devotion to loving everybody, serving everybody and remembering God, (the dharma bestowed upon him by his guru), his disarmingly ambitionless ambition, charming anecdotal humor, approachable scholarship and engaging, open-hearted personality, are to be beheld afresh in this elegant spiritual summary and approachable guidebook. I'm comforted and perplexed by his adventurous faith and spiritual courage, by the manner in which, like a child, he abides in and anticipates wonder, finding it - the unremote grace of it - in the pleasure perhaps of a big breakfast, a day at the beach and equally, in the incalculable mystery of suffering or in the "presence of Truth" he enjoys through his work with the dying. The book is invitingly wise, patient and compassionate, adeptly constructed upon Ram Dass's three-legged yogic foot stool of choice - a careful blending of the Bhakti, Jhana and Karma schools. It allays the suffering of our condition while never diminishing its imperative for self work.

Joseph Campbell, in The Hero With a Thousand Faces said, "Freedom to pass back and forth across the world division from the perspective of the apparitions of time to that of the causal deep and back - not contaminating the principles of the one with those of the other, yet permitting the mind to know the one by virtue of the other - is the talent of the master." Ram Dass is such a spiritual prodigy, and if he's not as imperturbably self-possessed as perhaps his guru, if he at least occasionally still struggles to be here now, it only makes his work, and this fine book, more approachable and essential for the rest of us. I agree with Tara Brach - another formidable spiritual writer - when she so eloquently recognizes "the felt transmission of Ram Dass's own radiant heart" in this work. For me, Polishing stands alongside the impressive spiritual and scholarly works of other contemporaries like Stephen Cope (The Great Work of Your Life), Thomas Kasulis (Shinto), Georg Feuerstein (The Yoga Tradition), David Whyte (Crossing the Unknown Sea) and the dog trainer Kevin Behan (Your Dog is Your Mirror).

Varian’s animosity is only one of many unsettling developments in Darnassus. An uneasiness creeps over the once-immortal night elves as the first of them fall victim to the infirmities of age. While they cope with their mortality, tensions flare over the reintroduction of the Highborne, formerly the highest caste of night elf nobility, into their society. Many night elves are unable to pardon the Highborne for the destruction unleashed on Azeroth millennia ago by their reckless use of magic.

When a murdered Highborne is discovered on the outskirts of Darnassus, Malfurion and Tyrande move to stop further bloodshed and unrest by appointing one of the night elves’ most cunning and skilled agents to find the killer: the renowned warden Maiev Shadowsong. Yet with all that is transpiring in Darnassus, the Alliance might be powerless to stop the relentless new warchief Garrosh from seizing the whole of Ashenvale.

Mislead

The book is one of unique taste. I don't think it was bad, just I'm not interested in Night elves. I bought this book because I thought it will be about the guy on the cover Varian. When in fact more than seventy percent of it is about Night elves and their mystery assassin. If I wasn't such a Varian fan I'll give this a book a thumb down. The book title said wolfheart, so you expect to see most of the book talk about worgens and Varian but it did not. The assassin killing highborne should have been side story at best not the main piece. If the worgen and King varian plot switch places with the night elf and the assassin plot it would be a whole new story. I meant the book should be called Jarod's journey not wolfheart because it barely dealt with the subject.I'm just saying, if you want to buy this book to know more about Varian or the worgens don't. Just read wiki page. If you want to know more about the night elfs then go and buy it.I insist, the title though is misleading as hell

Great Warcraft book, don't hesitate to buy!

As an avid fan of the Warcraft series and lore, I found this book great. The story and action were detailed but doesnt drag on. The action sequences are epic and the storyline itself is well written.

Overall the book is written pretty well except for some minor pet peeves that I have.

Heres some information for you Knaak, if an object is fired from a bow, its called an arrow, if its fired from a crossbolt THEN you can call it a bolt......

But seriously, check this book out. Its a good read.

Great WoW Novell; Must Read for Alliance Players

Okay, I have to admit this book surprised me. I went in expecting Knaak to be his usual self. While I'm not among his legion of haters, I will admit that Golden is usually the superior writer. Not this time. Richard Knaak has outdone himself, taking the characters of Tyrande, Malfurion, Varian, and Maiev and bringing them to live with an interesting story about acceptance, both of others and oneself.

First, I want to address the complaints about "bland characterizations." I'm often wondering if I read the same book as some other people. Yes, Varian Wrynn does start off his usual, obstinate, annoying self. But one of the plots of this book is deconstructing that, and moving Varian past his "King/Gladiator" dichotomy and making him one whole, balanced person again.

Tyrande is a bit sticker question. In World of Warcraft, the character has done remarkably little, so her only "in-game" characterization comes from Warcraft III, where she was a bloodthirsty, borderline racial supremacist who had no qualms murdering her own people if they got in her way. In other words, she was a lot like Maiev. Does Knaak portray her differently? Yes. he treats her a High Priestess. Someone's who believes in faith and hope, and thinks carefully before acting. I personally find this characterization vastly more endearing than the one from WCIII, who I didn't care if she lived or died. To each their own. As for accusations that she just sits there, that again, is overlooking her role in the conference, and her own (admittedly short) fight scenes.

Okay, back to the review. If you loathe Knaak's style, this book probably won't change your mind. But if you've been on the fence, or merely didn't like his own author-created characters, "Wolfheart" may just change your mind.

For Alliance fans, this book gives the faction a much needed boost of morale. In the game itself, the Alliance has taken the short end of the stick in regards to the storyline. By the third act, Varian Wrynn has finally mastered his rage and (some of) his prejudices, and leads the Alliance to it's first major victory in the face of the new Horde Blitzkrieg.

My other reservation is for new readers. If you're not already familiar with the Warcraft world, you'll be a bit lost by what's going on. This book is *not* a jumping on point for those not already familiar with Warcraft lore. Try "Rise of the Horde" or "Arthas: Rise of the Lich King" instead.

About the Author
MARCIA DIXCY JORY presently lives and works in Seattle. For sixteen years she was a costume designer for the Actors Theatre of Louisville where she designed over eighty productions, including thirty for The Humana Festival of New American Plays. She has designed costumes for The Guthrie, Long Wharf Theatre, The Hartford Stage Company, Manhattan Theatre Club, Circle in the Square, The Opera Company of Boston, Spoleto USA, Dublin Theatre Festival, and The Festival of Perth. She was a resident costume designer at Harvard University and has taught costume design at Tufts University, The University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Bennington College, and Smith College. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and NYU School of the Arts.

Feels like you're there.

John Muir is simply the best naturalist writer I have ever read. His writing is clear, descriptive and interesting. I typically don't like this type of writing, but his essays make you hear, see, taste and smell the outdoors. I usually like to experience nature directly, but Muir is the next best thing to being there. A collection of his best works is presented here.

ONE OF THE FIRST NATURALIST WRITERS

My favorite naturalist writer is Loren EisleyThe Immense Journey: An Imaginative Naturalist Explores the Mysteries of Man and Nature

Somehow, I stumbled on this book by John Muir, maybe because I ran out of Eisley. I don't remember which Eisley was my favorite, but he only wrote a few books, so you can easily read them all.

John Muir fascinates me, because as he describes Prudhome Bay in Alaska, one can come to understand nature even more so than popularists want you to. According to Muir, the Bay was not even formed in the late 1800's it was being born (the work of icebergs), and over the century it grew into a Bay as we know it today. His description of the work of the icebergs is beautiful, thoughtful and awe inspiring as it helps one to stop and realize that nature has a plan for everything. Icebergs give birth to baby icebergs that replenish the earth with the soil, the limbs of trees and whatever else has been captured by the iceberg as it moves to the sea. It is a marvelous story of the beauty of creation. His description of Alaska, bursting with song, with fish, fruit,and trees in the summer made me want to go there, it seemed a paradise lost, overlooked because winter coats the beauty for so many months. The writing is gorgeous.

Inspirational reading for all who love nature

I love nature, and only John Muir can take me to mountains, and meadows, touch wild life and its all so real and unpretentious. Reading these essays is a refreshing experiance, its like gazing at a nature scene only better because words can be more detailed. And what make the essays even better is the abundance of good he did for all humanity by being one of the main instruments to help preserve earths natureal beauty.

About the Author
Born in Seoul, Korea, ROBIN HA grew up reading and drawing comics. At fourteen she moved to the United States. Spicy Octopus Over Rice (Nakji Dupbap)

This is a supersimple, delicious seafood dish to soak up your rice with. I've used frozen octopus in this recipe to cut down the prep time. You can also use squid instead of the octopus. 
Cooking time: 20 minutes  Makes: 3 or 4 servings

Ingredients:
2 pounds octopus, cleaned and cut into bite-size pieces
1 medium carrot, peeled
1 Korean green or red chile pepper
1 medium onion
3 green onions, white and green parts
1/4 medium green cabbage
3 cloves garlic, peeled
1(1/2-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled
2 tablespoons Korean red chile flakes
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 teaspoons sugar
3 tablespoons olive oil
Salt 
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
4 cups freshly cooked rice
Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish 

Fresh octopus might be hard to find in regular grocery stores, but if you do find it, make sure you get rid of the intestine and clean it before using it. 
You can find already cleaned and cut octopus in the frozen seafood section of Korean grocery stores. 

Prep the Veggies! 
Wash all of the veggies. Cut the carrot and chile into thin pieces and cut the onion, green onions, and cabbage into chunky bite-size pieces. 
Slice the ginger, then crush the garlic and ginger. 

The Sauce
Mix the chile paste, 1 tablespoon of the chile flakes, soy sauce, and sugar.
Set aside. 

Quickly blanch the octopus in boiling water for a minute, then set it aside. 
Octopus loses its delicious juice and becomes tough and rubbery when it's overcooked. So DON'T OVERCOOK IT!

Over high heat, heat up the oil with the garlic, ginger, and the remaining 1 tablespoon chile flakes for a few seconds, then add the onion, carrot, and cabbage. Season with a pinch of salt and saute it for a couple of minutes.
Add the blanched octopus, chile, green onions, and the sauce. Saute for a couple of minutes, until all the ingredients are cooked.

Finally
Turn off the heat, drizzle with toasted sesame oil, and mix well.
Serve over freshly cooked rice and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for garnish!

The first and only cookbook I've read cover to cover

This book is much more than a cookbook! You learn about Korean food and culture through entertaining comics, and the recipes show you how you can make many different dishes using the same handful of staples. The illustrations (there must be 100s) are adorable and descriptive. I especially love the gorgeous watercolors that mark each new chapter--the paintings somehow make the dishes look more delicious than high-res/styled photographs would. Even if you don't cook you'll enjoy the author's stories told through comics, the amazing artwork on each spread, and you'll probably end up cooking some tasty treats from the book!

What a fun read! I bought this as a present for my sister and we spent an enjoyable (and at time contentious :)) evening making the Japchae recipe. We ended up making a few changes here and there but it was delicious. I highly recommend this book.

This book is so much fun! Saw the author at a book festival doing a cooking demo and got my copy signed.

I live in a large metropolitan area and have access to international markets, which for seaweeds and some ingredients you will definitely need (or Amazon) but at least once the initial purchases are made for your pantry you can use the individual ingredients many times. Her recipes are fairly straightforward, some have more steps than others, but everything I have made has been good. The seaweed salad recipe has become a regular in our lineup, and what a great way to get greens and minerals in the body during this summer heat when greens aren't growing much. Its educational, practical, and I think would be a good gateway for kids and teens to hook them into an interest in food.

Wish the author would collaborate with other cooks to illustrate a series of these type of books. I find without photographs, rather, its hand drawn of all the steps and the finished product helps the reader to not have as much stress about your dish not looking like a very stylized food photo like most cookbooks have these days, and focus on having an enjoyable time making simple good home meal preparations. Its also educational with Korean culture tidbits spread throughout the book.
