This is an excellent resource for those in medical settings.

The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features.

Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics.

I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine.

Concise, yet comprehensive sytematic approach to bioethics

Dr. Jonsen is one the nation's germinal thinkers in the field of bioethics. Through his experience and associations at several of the renowned medical academic institutions in this coutnry he sets forth a clear systematic approach to problems in bioethics. This includes a review of his "4-box" method for approaching ethical problems and then reviews basic ethical principles as well as legal definitions. His approach to clincal dilemmas provides a refreshing analytical process for dilineating issues and conflicts.

HEFTY TRIBUTE FIT FOR A SPORT'S KING 'Pelé' arrived for an interview strapped to a luggage cart and wheeled around by a publisher named Ovais Naqvi, who parked the parcel in a conference room. Naqvi stripped the tape from the carton to reveal 'Pelé', the megabook, resting inside a silk-covered wooden box. 'Pelé: Edson Arantes do Nascimento' is a Soccer tribute to Pelé, the man who entranced Brazil and the world with his soccer artistry and incandescent personality. When praise for him expanded beyond comparisons to other mortals, his admirers likened him to Saturn, or God. Pelé himself has said that God sent him to earth to play soccer and compared himself to Beethoven. So how better to celebrate the man at 66 than with a silk-swaddled tome of 720 pages that is 2 and three quarter inches thick, weighs 35 pounds and measures nearly 18 by 14 inches? It contains 1,700 images and 300,000 words by numerous sportswriters and interviews with some of Pelé s teammates between covers in the green and yellow of Brazil s national team. Pelé was paid a fee to sign each copy of the book and will receive royalties for providing autobiographical text. 'Other than Muhammad Ali, Pelé is the only other figure who has achieved the same international renown,' said Naqvi, the president and chief executive of Gloria, as he flipped through 'Pelé's glossy pages. Pelé's link to Ali goes beyond their global appeals. In early 2004, Taschen Books published 10,000 copies of 'GOAT: Greatest of All Time,' a 75-pound, 20-by-20-inch book that originally cost from $3,000 to $7,500 (because 1,000 books came with a bizarre porpoise sculpture by Jeff Koons). 'GOAT' has not yet sold out. Naqvi served as an editorial consultant to 'GOAT' and said he understood how to produce industrial-strength luxury books that he believed would produce high profits. I found "PELE" a great book. it's often a pleasure to read autobiography of such great player of the past, you will learn so much. Pele talks about his young life before stardom, his whole career with santos and the Seleçao, the story around his 1,000th goal, his life after his football career and so many more. I enjoyed the book!!

ANNE MARIE CAMMISA is Associate Professor of Government at Suffolk University in Boston, and during 1993-1994, was an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow. She holds degrees from the University of Virginia and Georgetown University.

Great Insight Into The Federal Government As The Pusher-Man

The federal government has grown from its humble origins to the behemoth it is today. The question why this has become a basic fact of modern life. Part of it rests in the efforts of federal politcians to secure their electoral futures through the provision of aid to the states, part of it also rests in the federal government's wish to ensure standards across local communities, but another part rests in the efforts of the state and local governments to lobby for federal aid. These governments go to the federal government because they want to secure more benefits for their residents but without increasing the taxes they collect from these individuals. They do this because it helps local politicians. This book tells how they "apply" pressure to the federal government. Camissa does a great job of illustrating these governments secure benefits, as well illustrating how the system works for those involved.

Agree - one of the best books on world politics

My wife, actually attended courses with Organski at U of Michigan and she kept his book and passed it to me. Very clear and insightful framework for understanding the dynamics of the rise and fall of great powers. My edition was 1968 and Organski accurately layed out the likely evolution of the Soviet Union, China, EU and the US. Excellent background to the tensions now taking place in E Europe and the way China is engaging the world as it grows in economic power. Without prejudice, outlines the challenges that totalitarian and party-dominated governments present to democracies. Really a must read!

It is the complete explanation of how the world works. In my opinion it is the best book ever written !!!!!!!
